At Sunset Recovery, we understand that making the decision to change isn’t always easy—especially when it comes to breaking free from addiction. That’s why we use Motivational Interviewing (MI) as part of our specialized treatment approach for men. MI is a collaborative, client-centered therapy designed to strengthen personal motivation and commitment to recovery.
Whether you’re feeling uncertain about treatment or struggling to find your “why,” Motivational Interviewing helps you uncover the inner drive needed to take ownership of your journey and create lasting change. How Motivational Interviewing Helps Men in Recovery
For many men, resistance to treatment doesn’t come from a lack of desire to get better—it comes from fear, uncertainty, or feeling stuck. MI provides a safe, non-judgmental space to work through those emotions and identify what really matters most.
Through Motivational Interviewing, clients learn to:
- Clarify their goals and values related to sobriety, relationships, and personal growth
- Strengthen intrinsic motivation for recovery
- Identify and resolve ambivalence about treatment or change
- Increase confidence in their ability to stay sober and move forward
- Develop personalized strategies for overcoming obstacles

Our Men's Motivational Interviewing (MI) Program
We believe that Motivational Interviewing (MI) offers a practical and experience-driven method of personal development and positive change. When coupled with evidence-based clinical therapies in group and individual settings, men come to know lasting recovery methods that resonate strongly with men.
Some of the evidence-based therapies we employ include:
- Rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT) – A form of psychotherapy that helps people identify, challenge, and replace irrational thoughts
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – A structured, goal-oriented form of psychotherapy that helps individuals identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors to improve emotional well-being.
- Trauma-Informed Care – An approach that recognizes the widespread impact of trauma and emphasizes safety, trust, and empowerment to support healing and avoid re-traumatization.
- 12-Step Integration – A therapeutic approach that incorporates the principles and practices of 12-step programs to support recovery through accountability, peer support, and spiritual growth.

Fostering Community in Our Florida Treatment Center
Our campus includes several shared housing units where men learn to live together, cook together, and clean together. Included in our expectations of our clients is that they treat their living quarters with care and respect, keeping them clean and supportive of recovery. We have onsite laundry facilities and a shared food pantry stocked with staples that augment what the men purchase for themselves.
Though fellowship isn’t a requirement of life at Sunset House, it’s practically unavoidable. Our men routinely prepare and enjoy their meals together. While their individual and group therapy sessions are teaching men vital recovery skills, these occasions of fellowship provide them with opportunities to practice what they’ve learned, including honesty, accountability, integrity, and empathy. Not to mention, the men are forging relationships and friendships that could last a lifetime.
