At Sunset Recovery, we recognize that addiction often stems from deeper, unresolved pain. For many men, substance use becomes a way to cope with trauma—whether from childhood experiences, relationships, military service, or life-altering events. That’s why our approach is rooted in Trauma-Informed Care, a treatment philosophy that understands, respects, and responds to the impact of trauma on the recovery process.

We create a healing environment where men feel safe, supported, and empowered to work through their past while building a better future. Learn more about our addiction treatment programs by calling 561.827.7401 or contacting Sunset House online.

How Trauma-Informed Care Helps Men in Recovery

Trauma-Informed Care isn’t a specific technique—it’s a holistic framework that shapes every aspect of how we support our clients. It involves understanding the widespread effects of trauma, recognizing the signs in those we serve, and avoiding any approach that could retraumatize or shame.

At Sunset Recovery, our staff is specially trained to:

  • Recognize the impact of trauma on behavior, emotions, and addiction
  • Create a safe and respectful environment where men feel in control of their healing
  • Empower clients to rebuild trust, confidence, and self-worth
  • Integrate trauma-sensitive practices into therapy, support groups, and daily interactions

Our Men's Trauma-Informed Care Program

We believe that Trauma-Informed Care offers a practical and experience-driven method of personal development and positive change. When coupled with evidence-based clinical therapies in group and individual settings, men come to know lasting recovery methods that resonate strongly with men.

Some of the evidence-based therapies we employ include:

  • Rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT) – A form of psychotherapy that helps people identify, challenge, and replace irrational thoughts
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – A structured, goal-oriented form of psychotherapy that helps individuals identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors to improve emotional well-being.
  • Motivational Interviewing (MI) – A collaborative, person-centered counseling approach that helps individuals explore and resolve ambivalence to strengthen their motivation for change.
  • 12-Step Integration – A therapeutic approach that incorporates the principles and practices of 12-step programs to support recovery through accountability, peer support, and spiritual growth.

Fostering Community in Our Florida Treatment Center

Our campus includes several shared housing units where men learn to live together, cook together, and clean together. Included in our expectations of our clients is that they treat their living quarters with care and respect, keeping them clean and supportive of recovery. We have onsite laundry facilities and a shared food pantry stocked with staples that augment what the men purchase for themselves.

Though fellowship isn’t a requirement of life at Sunset House, it’s practically unavoidable. Our men routinely prepare and enjoy their meals together. While their individual and group therapy sessions are teaching men vital recovery skills, these occasions of fellowship provide them with opportunities to practice what they’ve learned, including honesty, accountability, integrity, and empathy. Not to mention, the men are forging relationships and friendships that could last a lifetime.
